The VSS is the Vehicle Speed Sensor, it gets a signal from the teeth of the 5th gear. It sits below the starter. I believe you need to pull the starter to get to it. I have the manual for that year and it says to check the connector that is right at the VSS and to pull the VSS and clean and inspect the face. Clear the code and ride for a mile and see if it comes back. If it does start ohming out the wire to the ECM.
