Well, what I cannot understand when matching alternator output with the loads on the bike is this: I added the fog lamps and accent lights to my new '06 Deluxe, and in the winter months I use all heated outerwear. Everything calculated out fine with the alternator, but recently my voltage regulator died. Mechanic said I worked it to death, but they replaced it under the warranty. I am scratching my head trying to figure out how to prevent this in the future. Seems to me that it is not enough to have ample current from the alternator for your accessories, but that you need a regulator that can deal with it also. Or, is my dealer mechanic wrong? I am going nuts over this question and I will be forever indebted to anyone who has an answer for me. My understanding is thataccessories added onto a bike reduce the work of the regulator, especially regulators that operate by shunting. The only thing I can think of so far for ruining my regulator is perhaps the warmer weather overwhelmed the air cooled fins. There are other regulators out there that purport to be better than the conventional ones, e.g., from Crane [The Fireball] and from J&P Cycles. Has anyone replaced their HD regulator with another?
