I am struggling with this whole programmer deal. I'm not sure which way to go looking for a little help. I don't want to spend a whole lot once its set up I wont be making any changes. I have a 05 flhti with a 95" piston kit air cleaner hooker tuned flow slipons and planning on putting on a set of s&s power tune duals. bike was flashed from Harley. Do I need a programmer if I'm changing head pipes?
Any time you change the airflow, you need to adjust the fuel mixture. Do you need a tuner for that? No, another dealer flash should work, but I'd rather do it myself with my own tuner.
The flash is just a canned map, guaranteed to run lean. The way to get the most power and driveability is with a tuner that can be dialed in to your particular set up.
A power commander 5 will do just fine for you and there are starting maps available that make the engine run better albeit on the rich side.
After you save up a bit get it tuned properly for best performance and mileage by a qualified tuner and you will not be happier.
If you intend to do more engine mods (i.e.: cams and displacement) I recommend a proper flash tuner (no add-on box) and a tune that will produce a better running bike than a p/c.
