Default ECM problem

OK finally got time to plug in my stock Harley ECM, to see if the Zippers Max was bad, sure enough it's the ECM, bike started right up. did not run it to long or rap the RPMs up to high, but worked ,, now the question is to everyone out there, is should I stay with the Zippers box which will will run me about $750, or leave the stock Harley box in and buy the $250. race tuner then I will have to take it to the dealer to have it programmed, I Think?? anyways just looking for the pros and cons on this, or if anyone has a better way to go??? Thanks and look forward to seeing what you think?? and thanks to everyone who gave advice on what I thought was a fuel problem..

Before you throw the Zippers ECM in the trash give them a call, and talk the problem over with them. They may have a trick to reprogram the ECM, may have other things for you to check, you may be able to send the old unit to them for testing, and maybe they will give you a deal on a new or remanned unit.

It sound like you have the issue isolated. Good work.

Problem found now cut losses, reinstall the OEM ECM, buy a proper flash tuner of your chosen tuner’s choice and you will be happy ever after.

The post about the pump continuing to run equaling a bad injector is not accurate. Pumps bypass with the regulator - a running pump does not mean it's filling a cylinder. I have witnesses pumps run on - even with the bike off - when electronics have failed.

It may start and die because it will not be programmed well with the stock ECM, but you will know right away with the pump situation.

The first thing I would have done after a quick look over would be to plug the factory ECM in as a verification.

The pump should stop when the engine is not running - even with ignition switch on - because the crank position sensor is what tells the ecm the engine is turning and should wake up the system - including the pump.

The fuel pump stuff is right on.. If the fuel pump is staying on there is something wrong with either the ECU, the system relay or the wiring around the system relay. ECU turns on the pump for a specified time then shuts it off when it senses that that motor is not spinning over. As soon as the motor spins the pump should come on and stay on for a few seconds after the cranks has stopped spinning. The ECU does not have any way to sense fuel pressure.

If pump stays running could imply that there is something wrong with the Tmax. You might want to try resetting it. With the ignition off, pull the ECM fuse and let set for a minute. After that install the fuse and make sure the throttle is rolled off. Turn on the ignition (and run stop) for 30 seconds then off for 30 seconds.. Repeat 3 times. Then try to start..

You should do this process every time you disconnect the battery.. In fact you should pull the ECM fuse before messing with the power.

You can try and reload the map also..

Another thing to look at is the Crank sensor. They do go bad and are hard for ECUs to diagnose as bad.

Other possible things to look at are the security system or the bank angle sensor but you should be be getting turn signals flashing or an error code. Connecting up to the ECU and looking at error codes can help here.

Zippers does not make the T-Max unit, it is made by Tunderheart. T-Heart has been very nice to me on the phone when trying to get me to sell their product, so you might try contacting them to see if they can help you. If that does not work out for you i'd think about a TTS or a Powervision and a custom tune by a reputable tuning shop.....one of our sponsors, Fuel Moto can definitely help you with with the PV.
