My ride is a 2006 Softail Standard. Last year I had some performance mods completed which included punching the motor out to106 inches, rivera pro-clutch, 34-tooth sprocket, head work and re-mapping. The bike now makes 103 HP and 110 lb TQ. About 2,000 miles ago the I started to hear a squeak from the left side of the bike during hard acceleration - I could control the high pitched sound with the throttle. I thought it was the belt. I have cleaned and waxed the belt and the sound remains. Dealer didn't notice sound during 10,000 mile service. Today I took thebike for a 200 mile ride and stopped at an out of town dealer. I mentioned the squeak to the service dept and the service manager volunteered to give it a test ride - It didn't take him long. He said he most definately hear the sound and that it is engine detonation and that I have to have the bike tuned. He said if left un-checked it could damage the engine and even burn a hole in the pistons. I gently rode it home and it now sits in the garage waiting service. It's been making this sound for about 2,000 miles - should I be worried. Will a simple re-map solve the problem or should I have the motor opened up. Any advice from more knowledgable sources than myself is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Detonation doesn't squeak...its a ping sound. It could also sound like a brief chirp. http://www.motorcycle.com/how-to/wre...tion-3420.html

Sounds can be very difficult to diagnose. If you have pinging, it is an indication that you need to have it tuned. It may be as simple as an ignition timing adjustment. The fuel mapping usually doesn't need to be changed. Detonation is a severe form of pinging which can do major damage to your pistons. Have it tuned first. You don't need to be opening up the engine just yet.
