Had a similar issue once. Turned out to be the ignition switch on the tank console. Removed and cleaned with electrical cleaner and tightened the crimp on the spade connectors. Cured the random shut down.

If lights stay ON perhaps it is a bank angle sensor /tip sensor.
Not familiar with that model as to location.
The BAS/tip would shut motor off when triggered if it thought bike was on its side.
Also any chance that CAM sensor connector is not making correct contact.
I will take a guess that when you review wires or conduct the rubber mallet test that review is conducted slowly and methodically with bike ON and engine in neutral.
Wiggle and shake every wire..careful with spark plug and coil wires.

im, thank you for your help with this issue on my bike. I did a test on the bank angle sensor with a magnet (it worked) and I removed it from the bike. Don't know of any other test I can perform on it. Seems like a very simple switch. Just a ball bearing making electrical connections. It is one of the few I haven't replaced. Others are the speed sensor and the MAP sensor. Sucks having such a beautiful, great-running machine that doesn't work. A picture of it is on my intro page.

Default "fixed?"

It was not a fuel issue, but I did check the gas tank, fuel filter, and the carb, even though I was sure it was not a fuel issue. Remember it shuts down as if I threw the kill switch. Well, yesterday I replaced the bank angle sensor (bas) - I was running out of parts to replace. Well, even though no code was presented to indicate a faulty bas and it did pass a magnet test I performed and it was probably the easiest and cheapest part I replaced. Took it for a thirty mile ride with no shut downs. Before I replaced the bas she was shutting down within minutes of going on a test ride. Planning on a longer ride today. Any way thanks for everyone's inputs. This is one to remember..

Since you replaced the BAS, I'd suggest you take the original apart to see what was going on inside. It could be helpful to others. It's the simple ones that tend to be the hardest to find. I'm wondering if moisture invaded and created rust that would make and break contact. Ball bearing would have to be non-ferrous to not rust and at 21 years old, rust is always a possibility, regardless of how well a component may appear to be sealed.

I was leaning towards ignition switch as well from the sequence you gave. But it appears you found it. Congrats. Intermittent issues like this can keep you awake at night.

regards,
Rob

Default bas

Thanks for the response Snake. I intend to open this little sensor and try and find out why it did this to me. It's a sealed unit so must be careful in opening it up. Didn't think the ignition switch was the culprit because only the engine was cutting off, not the lights, but I did take a look at it anyway. Have over 200 miles since I replaced the bas- so far, so good. Will input when I figure the bas. Thanks again to all.

By the way, to im, I believe you were the only one, beside me, to think the bas may have been the culprit. Although it took me a long time and replacement of many good components to think it was the bas.

No, I was not the guy who thought it might be the BAS. As a vintage bike guy, things like the BAS never enter my mind. I only own one modern bike, my 2001 Fatboy. The next newest is a '78 R100/7 BMW. It's got POINTS!!!

I joined here because my Fatboy is acting up. I think I have an idea of what the problem is. It's also given me an idea for an adapter that would not be expensive to produce on CNC equipment and would help other HD FI bike riders measure fuel pressure without having to break the bank for tools.

regards,
Rob
