Posted this in the wrong section before. Maybe I can get help here. Trying not to take her to the dealer. 2000 carb'd softail, 65k miles, virtually trouble-free till now. Runs fine until I come to a stop, then shuts off. All lights, indicators ,etc. stay on. She starts back up after a few tries and runs fine until I stop and we do over . Trouble codes 42 and 56. Those are Cam position sensor(cmp) and crank position sensor(ckp) respectively. Well I replace cmp thinking I've fixed it , wrong , problem still there. Spoke with those who know more than I do and getting different opinions. One says replace ckp, ignition control. I don't believe anything was wrong with the sensor I replaced and would like any ideas on where to go besides the dealer. I may end up there eventually.
Well, I felt this was beyond my capabilities so off to Hardly I went. My ride there is 20 miles and made it without any issues. So wonder what is going on? After all that, they tried to sell me a tranny fix for "only about two thousand dollars". Don't you love it "only two thousand dollars". Indian must be ruining their monopoly on the American market. They have so lost me and I have no faith or confidence in this shop. I know I'm screwed cause there is no where else to go . Really sucks. No wonder they are losing customers. Going to hang on to my scoot and hopefully I'll find an answer to my problem. This is what the tech said he found. Metal shavings on my speed sensor which may have been causing the bike to shut off at stops. "See this all the time". "We need to get into your tranny". My response, "No, I'll pick her up today". Well I rode her home without any problems. Very apprehensive every ride. Probably boring y'all but have to vent and hoping for help. Ride on.
I had a similar issue with my 2000 WG, bike would just shut down for no reason, sometimes at the most inconvenient places, then would restart no problem after a period of time, usually minutes. Threw a CKP code, replaced it, good to go. That was around 20K miles ago, no problems (with that particular issue) since. Pretty easy to replace it, a bolt-in part, properly routing the cable the hardest part.
Reading this a few times.
You have a bike with a carb.
Bike operates correctly throughout all gears and while at speed.
The bike turns off when you stop.
Taking a guess that battery has been tested and that charging system is OK at rest, high idle and while cranking.
You can check those items with a simple digital multi-meter.
Battery can be load tested at most auto parts for free or very little.
I will also take a guess that battery cables at post are tight and that if you are using a non-harley battery that posts have the little brass color spacers that help cables sit flush.
I will take another guess that cables are tight not only at battery but also at the other ends.
Then i would take a look at inside of tank for garbage.
Then i would look at float bowl on carb for varnish clean-up.
