setting timing
i checked my timing today, problem is the only tach i have is a car digital tach. i set it to 4 cylinder and figured the rpms should be 1/2 of the reading, right or wrong. anyway, when the tach reads reads 1400 rpm the timing is 35-40 degrees advanced, on my timing light with the adjustable advance dial on the back, and when it idles down to 900 rpm it reads TDC. bike starts right up and runs great. but im thinking if my tach is set for 4 cylinder than 900rpm is really 450 rpm, pretty low and it sounds low. what kind of tach are you all using to set your idle for setting the timing.

im not sure what the advance on your motor is, but i had to use the auto portable tach myself. rpms read 1/2 what they actually are on the motorcycle when you set it to 4 cyl. when you get the idle speed set, on my timing i hook it up to the front cyl. plug wire, shine the light in the timing hole. at 1200 rpm( 600 indicated on tach) the timing mark is supposed to be centered in the timing hole. best to get a manual and read through it for your bike cause mines old and there might be some slight differences in how you time yours, but this will give you a heads up!

thats what i figured. the bikes rpm is 1/2 of what the digital tach is readin, set at 4 cylinder. im at TDC with the tach at 900 rpm and the advance is between 35-40 degrees. another site, cant remember the name of it, but wrote me and said the advance should be about 34 degrees at 2400 rpm. just seemed that the advance comes in to early, at 700-800 rpms. but then like i said, it starts right up, doesnt ping, oil temp stays cool and runs great.
