ok well i just bought a 1977 hd cafe racer, one of the bikes i have always wanted, this one has less that 5000 miles on it, runs great, but after about 100 miles or so the plugs quit firing one or both, i have put 4 sets of new hd plugs in it trying to keep it all original. they appear with nomal colors and no oil deposit, i have installed new points, cond, air filter oil change and put a new carb kit in it , thinking maybe fuel prob, or points prob or contaminated oil, sometimes its only one that quits firing, sometimes both, i shut the gas off after i stop everytime.. i can put a new set it it and it starts without even i engine turn, they last for a lil while then go bad.. i am about ready to try another brand of plug but wantinmg to keep it 100% original harly i need to know where else to look, the plugs seem to just quit firing or fire deep inside the plug intsead of at the electrode tip , like i said they look normal color just quit any helpfull advice?
I would like to try to help you by telling you about my new lawnmower. I started my mechanic career many years ago in our family lawnmower shop so I was embarrased that I couldn't keep my mower going. It ran perfectly the first few times I used it. Then it would start, run a few minutes and quit. It would not re-start until I replaced the spark plug. The old plug looked normal, maybe a little dark tan porcelin, but pretty normal for a lawnmower. I finally discovered that the choke was a two stage setup. When it started, I would pull the throttle cable back a notch and cut the grass. I didn't realize there were two notches, one for full choke and the other for partial choke. By using it on part choke it was running too rich and the excess fuel was fouling the porcelin with a conductive coating that effectively shorted out the plug.
If your engine starts right up and runs good after changing the plugs I would look to see that the choke is completely open when you push the **** in. Or, the carb could be running too rich. If the porcelin gets coated with a conductive substance there will be no spark. Spark always takes the path of least resistance.
On my 05 1200c, with a very similar situation, it turned out to be the crank sensor - dealer couldn't figure it out till it finally quit altogether - frustrating as hell! - don't have enoough background to even know if a 1977 cafe racer even has a crank sensor - good luck.
