I have an 04 Low Rider with fuel injection that my son in law wants me to look at. I can use some suggestion or direction of an angle to look at. Its a high mileage motor and it will idle, then burp once in a while then sometimes it dies, it will fire right back up. If I rev it it stumbles until you get higher in RPM range then it smoothes out. The plugs are a nice tan color, I sprayed the intake seals and there was no change. Should I be looking at coil or throttle body? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
First thing I would do is check the bike for codes , if no codes , go ahead and clean the iac , if it hasn't been done in awhile , it's probably got some gunk in it . Place a rag inside the tb and give the pintle a few shorts bursts of tb cleaner , you can turn on your ignition and flip the run / stop switch ( do not start the bike ) , this will open / close the pintle , making the cleaning process much better . After doing that , clean the butterfly and seat , done .
How many miles on bike ? If you have no way of measuring fuel pressure , if the fuel filter hasn't been changed in awhile , I would do that , probably needs doing . I've always been in the habit of changing the fuel filter every 25k , if you have a lot of mile on the bike , it also wouldn't hurt to change the fuel hose and fuel regulator as well .
You can always run a couple tanks of sea foam in the tank and see if it cures the problem ( 1 ounce per gal ) , but that won't clean a plugged fuel filter or faulty fuel regulator . It will clean clean up the fuel system , remove moisture , and clean injectors / carbon build up , especially if your not running an external breather .
Thanks guys for the advice. I cannot check for codes because the odometer window is dark so its unreadable and the reset button is no longer there. It has like 150k miles (yes, its that old). Im trying to clean up the bike and get it running so the kid can sell it and move up to a better bike. This is his first HD. It would be a wise move to replace the filter and hose.
Believe it or not I used some fuel cleaner/ additive. Had a bottle of Amzoil. Man that stuff worked pretty good after a 6-7 mile road test. Son in law was highly impressed but I told him to sell it and dont get attached to it.
