My 71 FL keeps cutting out on me. The ignition system will just shut down without warning. Then if I wait a minute or two and turn the ignition /key to the on position againI can hear the starter rely make a snapping sound and the whole bike goes dead again. No lights nothin. Then a few seconds laterand after the key is put back in the off position, the rely snaps again. If I wait for a good ten minutes or so she will fire right up again and run like a champ.Make me think somethinglike a wire is heating up, but yesterday I rode it for about 30 minutes and no problems. Then I stopped for a few minutes rode another fifteen minutes and it cut out on me. I let about ten minutes pass and itfired right up.She is running a new Crane hi4 and a crane coil. When she runs, she runs strong. Oh and I just changed the starter rely too. This has been an intermitting problem for some time now that I just can not seem to isolate. Overall the charging sytem seems to work fine when the bike is runing. Any help would be much appreciated.
It could be the coil breaking down and shorting out, the ign mod heating up and shorting out, these would be the logical things to look at but I had a situation once where the ignition wire going to the coil was run real close to the rear rocker boxand frame....as the engine grew from the heat the rocker box pinched the ign wire at the frame and when the engine contracted as it cooled the wire was no longer pinched. I'm not saying this is your problem but here is a few things to look at.
Breaker on rear fender area could be faulty or a short could be tripping it.Also tank ignition switch may be weak or posts worn. The aftermarket units arent the best.Try starting bikeand move ignition switch-barely wiggle it-without turning to off postion.Does bike still die with bikes switch in full right-headlight position?
