Any tips on how to seal the butt-splice connectors without a heat gun? I thought about using a lighter or torch but am afraid I will fry the wires. Any advice will be much appreciated.
I've used a bic lighter and it works fine. Just make sure you don't hlod the flame on any one spot long enough to melt or ignite the connector. Practice on a scrap piece of heat shrink to get the feel for it.
NO! Don't try to seal a butt splice with a lighter. It's not designed for that. That's only for heat shrink.
You will burn up a butt splice and never get a waterproof seal. You need to use heatshrink over a bare crimp or an insulated crimp.
The best kind of heatshrink has a hot seal lining. As it is heated it melts the inner liner and flows outward. Totally waterproof.
Regular heatshrink is next. Make sure you have a good overlap on the wire. Invest in a heat shrink gun. Same thing as a paint strip gun. I have seen them as cheap as $13 on ebay.
The heatshrink responds faster and no black crap or burnt wires. They make heatshrink in all kinds of colors and sizes.
