check engine light comes on for 3 or 4 seconds after starting then goes out.bike runs fine. how do you check for codes. thanks new to sight, seems like there are alot of good people here.
Well, the check engine light comes on when you turn on the ignition as the ecm runs through it's self check procedure. The bike will start but you should wait for the check engine light to go out before doing so. You'll also hear the fuel pump running pressurizing the system.
Intermittant faults is light the check engine light and it will go out when the fault doesn't persist but that is like 90 seconds. It will store a historical fault code when it does that. There's a procedure that will get the turn signals to flash out the fault code but I don't have a link to it. If there is a code stored the signals will flash and the security light will stay on when you turn on the bike.
it comes on after the i wait for engine light to go out then start it and the light comes on for a couple seconds after that. no flashing of the signals or security light on
I guess my understanding of how it works is wrong then. I thought it held a fault for 90 seconds to give you a chance to notice it. Perhaps it depends upon the specific fault or maybe I'm just flat out wrong about it ever being 90 seconds. So you have an intermittant problem. If you do a search on Google for "Harley DTC" you should get some links to the procedure for getting it to flash out the code and for lists of what the codes mean.
found what you were telling me about on google i had a butt load of codes wrote them down and reset it and no more reaccuring codes and no more engine light.i will take it for a spin and check again. thanks for your help wizer
