Had a problem today, my just acquired 98 Ultra classic (fuel injected) didn't idle worth a damn. The idle would keep changing between 1000 RPM and about 1600 RPM. Sort of like a gallop. Every 2 seconds it would go up then down.
The idle reminds me of a four stroke lawn mower engine with a governor, over compensate then under compensate
Wish I could explain it better than that.
The temp. here is about 55 degrees, when the idle wasn't going up and down, it would stay at the high idle, about 1600 RPM.
Last I ran it was about 2 weeks ago, the temp. that day was about 65 degrees, it idled fine that day. And I am on the same tank of gas that I ran that day.
The only thing that has changed since the previous ride is I cleaned and oiled the K&N air filter, I bought the bike used in January, when I recently looked at the air cleaner, it looked like the last guy blew it out with compressed air and didn't oil it, it was bone dry.
It's been said many times - first double check the most recent things you've done to it. If you just changed the air filter and oiled it, is it possible you over-oiled it and are now cutting off air flow which would make it run rich. I think that could contribute to the galloping you describe.
A guy at the local bike shop said to get the oil off the K&N filter and run it dry, he said he had seen many sensor(MAP) problems getting covered with sticky K&N oil.
