When I accelerate the motor hesitates momentarily and then delivers power. I noticed this initially when the bike was cold but now it seems to be happening even after riding several miles.
I replaced the spark plugs and wires and the problem got better.
Time to clean the carb, maybe; been experiencing carb farts or backfire? Carb bikes will at high throttle response will go very lean from the opening of the throttle palte, then rich from the accelerator pump, and then should level out. If your jets or air inlets have gunk in them, it will choke off one or the other so response will be greatly affected.
Not sure how to check the accelerator pump. As far a cleaning the carb can I just spray it with berrymans cleaner? Does this require removal and disassembly?
Is this the time to do a stage one kit, considering the above?
The carb acelerator is a pump inside the carborator that squirts extra fuel when the throddle is opened. Without this pump the engine would be very lean and stumble, gasp, maybe backfire. Some will say the engine won't take the gas but it is actually just the oposite. Thats why someone said accelerator pump.
These systems are very simple and easy to get to. These things have been around about 100 years. The pump is a wear out thing. A repair kit is the simplist way to go. If there is crud in a jet you will have to take partially apart anyway to clean. Buy a manual for your bike. Not very complicated job to do. Stage 1 stuff MUCH more expensive and not necessary if this is the proble.
Try the cleanout approach first. Water in the gas could affect similarly.
There are some safety issues because you are opening the fuel system--- Gasoline. Do it outside or in a well ventilated place. Turn off the fuel valve without fail.
