Default Charging system question....

Ok 01 SERG Started not charging the other day, checked battery it was low, imagine that with the charging system not putting out. I checked the stator and has 7.5 volts AC at 1000 rpm and about 15-17 volts AC at 2000 rpm = bad stator I know. Then checked the reg, no cont across the pins, but there is .2 to .4 volts from pin to ground which means bad diode in reg I am told. So this means that either the batt (btw the batt still wont hold a charge) the reg and the stator went bad all at once or that the reg or stator went and took the rest with it when it went. If anyone has that answer great. But on to the real question. What damn amps is the stock stator, dealer says 38amp, some catalogs say 45 amp. Big price difference here. Does it matter to the reg or the rotor if you use a 45 amp in a 38 amp or vise versa? Any help would be appreciated.

More than likely, your bike has the 38, but then again, they were designed for Evo's, 45's were designed for police use (Things that make you go hmmmm), eventually, the Ultra's were equipped with the 45's from the factory..... Do yourself a favor and upgrade it... Yes, you will pull a few bucks out of your pocket now, but the longevity and reliability will be there... Your Charging system won't be working as hard to fulfill the needs of the bike.... That's one of the reasons that th 06's are equiped with 50's... less stress on the system components...

i see that you put a meter everywhere but the battery. With the bike off what does the battery meter at? now with the engine running what does the battery meter? If you are reading at least 13.5 (or something close) then you simply have a bad battery.

I did check the batt, it was reading from 10.5 to 11 either way, and with the bike will not run with the batt. I read on another post here that MOCO had but a 38 amp stator wiht a 45 amp rotor (bigger mags) in 99-01 touring bikes by mistake. Don't know how true that is, but when I pulled mt stator last night there was a clearly chared spot on one of the bundles. Batt has been charging for 3 days and still drops to 11.5 volts shortly after you dissconnect the charger. Put new stator in last night, it btw has the replacement number that is on that service notice (not recall). Just waiting for the new reg to get here today.

it does get hot inside the stator cavity so it isn't unusual to see something like that. not trying to burst your bubble but if the battery can't hold a charge it may have been wiped out as well. also, the use of 45 amp alternators over the 38 amp alternators on large cruises was because they have more electronics. regardles of how many amps the alternator puts out if the regulator is working properly you will still see the same amount of volts at the battery.also, longevity should not be an issue. i have had many bikes that never lost a charging system regardless of how old they were or how many miles they had on them. if you are running extra lights or someother kind of electronics that didn't come from the factory then i would upgrade.
