I've been having a problem for the last six months or so...my bike always starts when cold, but once in a blue moon whenever I stop for gas and restart it sounds like the the jackshaft is griding on the ring gear; engaging and disengaging but not enough rev's to start.
I inspected the ring gear and jackshaft and the teeth all look good.

Never have a problem when the bike is cold. Most days I go to work and come home with only two starts involved...it only seems to happen when I stop for gas the attempt a hot start.
believe this or not I have a 09 dyna that done that. turned out the primary was low on oil. I thanked the dealer for missing that when they serviced it.

Turn the ignition switch on, put the run rocker to run and right then hit the start switch.
why wait till the pump does its thing? do you wait for the Cage to pump up?
My 2007 Heritage Softail Classic was doing the same thing. Turned out to be the starter clutch, and a bunch of $$ to replace. At first I, too, thought it was my map and tuning. Now it starts with the touch of a button. I would check the cheapest option first.
