I've been having a problem for the last six months or so...my bike always starts when cold, but once in a blue moon whenever I stop for gas and restart it sounds like the the jackshaft is griding on the ring gear; engaging and disengaging but not enough rev's to start.
I inspected the ring gear and jackshaft and the teeth all look good.
I had the jugs bored and matched to 10:1 screaming eagle pistons with 203 cams installed about 30K ago.
Never have a problem when the bike is cold. Most days I go to work and come home with only two starts involved...it only seems to happen when I stop for gas the attempt a hot start.
Hope you get some good scoop here.
I'm having the same issue.
Last few months, only when bike is hot, NEVER in the morning on first start up.
Always seems to happen with a bunch of other riders around and everyone jumps out of their skin.
My bike is an 07 Train with 21,000 miles, V&H SSS, S/E intake w/ K&N filter and a PC III.
Stopped by the dealer today and guess what, it would not do it when I tried to show the service manager.
Good Morning guys, I recently started to experience this as well " Hot start Troubles"
Not really trouble but an annoyance, especially when at the pumps or at the border crossings.
I have tried the bump it over method and that appears to work maybe 40% of the time.
What I found I was doing was after the Hot Start , I would hit the starter button all the way down to its full stop.
It was then that I noticed the majority of the jack-shaft spitting back, grinding noises and farts through the throttle body .
What I do now is , just hit the button lightly and not all the way in. This appears to work 90% of the time now.
Will it work for you, I cant say it will, but give it whirl.
Rob
Have done extensive changes on my 08 FLSTF, Fatboy,.
107, woods 7h, etc, etc.
Mind did the same thing. the Wife got to where she didn't want to go with me.
I used the SERT then. Now use the TTS Mastertune.
Way too much "Cranking Fuel". Turned out.
I made some bold moves cutting the "Cranking Fuel". Things got better. Lowered it some more and now just push the button.
Try cutting the "Cranking Fuel" however your tuner does it. Start with 10%, maybe 15%. See what happens. Won't hurt.
Talked to my indy last week; he says he's seeing more and more '07 and '06 models with bad starters that are doing the same as mine, he has one in his shop doing the exact same thing...
I though I had a bad starter also. Seemed it wasn't holding in long enough and spitting back bad.
Or if not that it sounded like it was barely able to turn the engine over.
