I have just bought my first harley (2000 fatboy) and after riding for about a week the speedometer started kicking out,the odometer also blanks out and the red engine light comes on. The speedometer, odometer and engine light come back to life when i pull in the clutch or i drive really slow with low rpms.
I would really appreciate anyones help !!!
I have cleaned the sensor on the transmission and that did not solve the problem.
The speed sensor will not cause the other symptoms. One thing I would check is that it is not overcharging. Those could be symptoms of that. It would make sense because when you slow down, so does the charging system. Since your description has no real troubleshooting done already except the sensor, and the sensor will not cause the odometer display to blank out or the check engine light to come on, I would advise hooking up a voltmeter to the battery and holding the rpm's at 3000 and see what voltage is being delivered. Too high can cause all of the above.
Thanks Eagle ! I will try the voltage test and let you know what I find. I did find out how to check the trouble codes on the speedometer and a d08 code was tripped from a power overload. Sounds like you hit it on the head.
Sorry for they delay, Our itnernet crashed !
Anyway, I have tested the voltage and i had readings between 13.2 to 14.0. I do not have a tach so i had no clue as to what rpm i was reving to while testing the voltage. At idle it tested around 12. Since my last post i have replaced the battery and the speedometer sensor and still have the same problem.
Here are all my problems again !
1 speedometer cuts out. engine light comes on, odometer blanks out. While driving if I pull in the clutch and coast everything starts to work again.
2 My turn signals will not auto shut off
3 My right side turn signals comes on but will not blink. (front blinkers are built into the mirrors and are led and half of the led lights in the right side mirror quit working)
Check all your ground wires? Could be a bad
ground ...
Also take the seat off and with the key on
wiggle pull and tap on things, this may help point
you to the problem. Do the same with the speedometer
or dash, take off the nut and lift your dash up to check
all the wires under there.
I found the problem ! After searching the wiring for shorts and not being able to find any, I decided to inspect the wiring for the voltage regulator a little closer. I still could not find any. so, I took the voltage regulator off and there was a big burn hole thru the back of it. I bought a new one and installed it and all my speedometer problems went away.
