Default charging system problem HELP!

Okay here's the background, its an 86 flhtc had it less then a year it sat all winter bought a new battery and everything was fine. Then it died one day after a long ride, I charged it up hoping it was just a fluke but it happened to me again today and after the bike was jumped I rode it straight home watching the voltage decrease the entire way home. After inspecting the bike I noticed the stud that connects the starter to the alternator was loose. Could that have been the problem or is it the alternator?

On that model there should be a single wire coming from the regulator, running up the right side, and connecting to the + terminal on the batt. My '88 model died at 45k miles, the insulation went on the stator. Any good shop should have the tool that tests the regulator. I put in a Compufire alternator and regulator kit, solved the problem permanently. And I assume you mean the connection on the stud was loose, and not the stud itself. Another alternative is corrosion in the plug assy on the left front where the AC comes out of the alternator. The manual gives good instructions on testing the charging system.

Thanks for the advise, I checked all that I could but didn't have a multimeter to electrically check it. It was actually the stud coming out of the starter that was loose but tightened the back nut and it was good. I work to much and had to drop it off at the shop today or else i'd have to wait until thursday. On my way home from the shop EVERYONE was out riding, it sucked to watch em all.
