I was riding late this afternoon and i got a phone call. I pulled off on to a residental street. When i came to a stop i killed the bike using my switch on my handlebars. I never turned the main **** to the off position while i was on the phone. When i got done talking i pushed the switch back to the run position and then pressed the iginition button. When i did the electrical system went completly out. Everything died. So i turned the main **** over to the access location and then the system came back on. So i tried again in the iginition postion and the system went out again. Then the weird thing happened.. I turned the main **** to the off postion and the system went nuts and all the gauges made clicking noises and then seemed like they pulled enough power and they came on!! I dont get why they come on in the access location and the off location but not the ignition location? I have checked all the fuses and none are blown. Not even the big fuse under my seat ( I dont know excatly what that fuse is called ) is blown. Honestly i wouldnt even know where to start on looking to try and find or trace what is going on. Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.. I will also try and answer any questions the best i can to my knowledge. Thanks again
I'm no expert, far from it but it seems like your symptoms may be caused by an electrical short of some sort.....or possibly a failing battery. Lots of possibilities....the main on/off/accessory switch could be faulty......your start/stop switch may be faulty.....the start switch may be faulty. Have you worked on the bike's wiring or anything on the bike that could have broken or frayed a wire in any of these places?
I'd start at the battery with a multi-tester to see what kind of voltage you are getting there and then if that's good move onto battery ground wires/strap, battery posts....looking for corrosion, poor connections, etc. If nothing found there then the aforementioned switches will need to be examined and you'll probably need a shop manual to help you with that....or your Harley dealer. Good luck....let us know how it works out.
thanks for the help. i will take the battery and get it tested tomorrow for sure. if a battery starts to fail and dosent have enough voltage could that possibly make the gauges and radio and all act haywire?

Well, like I said I'm not an expert but I have ridden bikes for 30 some years and every time I've had odd electrical issues it's usually been due to either a dying battery or rusted out ground strap or connections going south. When electricity can't find the path it was designed to take thanks to one or more of the above problems then it's going to find another path and produce odd symptoms like what you experienced.
