Default Wiring extensions???

Ok, so I am (or Sean is) trying to install buckhorn handlebars on my new 1200C and we run into major problems. The 1200C has this 6 inch riser on it so when you add the buckhorns nothing and I mean nothing fits! Sean figured he would have to run new cables but the electical wiring for the switches won't reach. What do you do about that? I called the HD dealership and they said there are no wiring extensions for sportsters...only road kings. So what do we do? Sean thought we could get a smaller riser and take the big one off but then the way the speedometer mounts that would have to be changes out too. I just never figured it would be such a hassle. So, I thought I'd go to the experts. We need about 3 more inches of wire. Is it more logical to just get smaller risers or is there a way to extend the wiring?

Heather,

You can extend the wires yourself, have you checked any aftermarket sources for the wire extensions?

I haven't but I believe Sean has looked in the J&P catolog. I'll tell him to look again. I just can't believe there is no way to do it. But if you talk to Harley they insist the buckhorns will not work on a 1200C. The only thing we can figure is it is because of the riser and the way the speedometer is mounted below the bars. Any ideas on where to look for wire extension?

Sean found some 2 1/2 inch risers and from his measurements he thinks all the cables and wiring will work with the new risers. The only other thing would have to be a speedometer that mounts above the bars. He's going to call around tomorrow to see if this will work.

Heather, My suggestion is like John's. You can extend the wires the amount you need. Just cut and splice in some additional wire. I'd find a place down the harness that will be inconspicuous. Strip back the harness cover and cut the wires. Splice additional wire into each wire using bare butt connectors then covering each one with heat shrink tube. Or you can solder each one and cover it with heat shrink. I've suggested bare butt connectors rather than insulated because they are smaller. You'll need twice as many as you have wires since there are two connectors for each wire. Once you get through, either cover the spliced area with heat shrink or wrap it with electrical tape. Pat
