Testing the charging system?
Hey all... I have a 2000 FX that I just put a battery in last week, bike ran great up until yesterday, wont start, charged it up and its good to go...so my question is How can i check my stator/alternator? and is it possible to check the rectifier? How do you do it? Guys...I'm lost when it comes to electrical problems, so any advice would be appreatiated, Thanks, Jim

Simplest test is to check battery voltage with a meter. Should be 12-12.5 volts sitting; with the motor running it should be at least 14 volts; if not, I would suspect regulator first. The input to the regulator is AC voltage - not sure of spec for your bike, but if nothing there I would suspect stator.
Normal testing wold be to check the voltage (DC) at the battery, like siad, it should be around 12 V at idle, ramp up to 14.2 or so at around 2000 RPM's, if not then you would check your stator next. unplug the stator and probe it (AC current) differs on year and model of bike. If you have the AC current check each lead for a short to fround, you can use the continuity funtion of your meter if it has it. If either of these tests fail the stator/rotor is the problem. If they pass then it's the voltage regulator.
