So I have a new to me 99 sportster 1200. The battery is good and charged, and the fuses are good, but I'm not getting any juice. Starter doesn't move, no lights, no horn, nothing. Short of pulling and checking/replacing every wire in the thing, is there anything obvious I should look at?
I can turn a wrench okay, but electrical stuff is a mystery to me.
I've got the service manual and the clymer manual is on its way.
This one shouldn’t be that hard to find: 1.) Check Main Fuse 2.) Check Battery Voltage 3.) Check Battery Jumpers - +Battery and GND Connection 4.) Check Voltage between Ignition Switch and Chassis
It didn't even occur to me to check the ignition switch... I'm dumb with electrical.
Is the main fuse the same as the main circuit breaker? Is there a way to test it? I own a multimeter... Don't really know what to do with it, but I own it.
Poking through there again I realize there's no starter relay, or the wiring for it. Knowing the previous owner it wouldn't surprise me if there's a starter bypass or kill switch hidden somewhere. Looks like I'll be chasing wires regardless.
Thanks for the help!
The Main Fuse and Main Circuit Breaker is one and the same thing. The starter relay is located in the fuse box. It is a 12V/20A automotive relay, when activated it powers up the Starter Solenoid (which is inside the Starter Motor).
Looks like your buddy has done some creative wiring. I hate when this happens, it usually is a mess.
Here is one way to test if vehicle can start at all - bypass the Ignition Switch. Bend a paper clip, connect an #18 gauge wire to the middle, then insert the clip in place of the Ignition Fuse. The other end of the wire connect to +Battery terminal. Now your bike should light up. Place transmission in neutral and activate starter.
