Faulty Ignition Coil / Computer Module
On a recent long trip the ignition system died intermitently between 60-70 mph (even the rev counter stopped) to give a jerky stop/start ride but "fixed" itself after 5-10 minutes. The problem has not occured recently.
I tried to set the timing using an induction type strobe light (a sensor is attached to the outside of the spark leads to get the timing). I can only pick up a signal on the lead going to the rear cylinder. Both plugs are sparking and the problem persists if I change the leads around (so it is not the leads). I started to test as per the manual but most tests require HD's "special" multimeter. The bike fires up OK.
Any ideas what could be wrong?
Im assuming that the strobe light should pick up a pulse from both leads?
What is likely to be causing the problem and what simple tests can be done?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions
A quick update on the ignition / module etc.
I checked with the service department of the local HD distributor who were not able to advise if the timing light should work off both leads. Not surprisingly they follow the manual and do the timing on the front cylinder and have no need to look at the back cylinder. I also checked the Ignition / Module operation on a friends '95 evo and discovered that the induction timing light only works on one spark lead and not both like mine - ergo this is normal.
As for the timing; I checked the timing with the leads going to either spark plug and the induction light running off the front and back cylinder. This made no difference to the timing which I guess is to be expected from a single pin twin (ie both cylinders are at TDC at the same time).
