Default Voltage Regulator going bad?

Tonight I noticed my lights getting dim, then bright, once every minute or so. The voltage gauge would also swing between 12 to 14 volts when this happened. I suspect the voltage regulator is going bad. The bike is a 2005 Ultra with 65,000 miles, and it is the original regulator. Opinions?

Thanks.

If you have the factory service manual there is a series of tests you can do to identify any charging fault. There is also an excellent thread here on HDF, although it may take some finding. I think it is by 'Dr Hess' in the Evo section.

Thanks for the links. I ended up getting a new battery (it was four years old) and a new regulator. That cured the problem. I suspected the regulator was bad, and it probably damaged the battery (I'm sure it didn't help it, anyway).

Do check that you are getting a good charge, to ensure your alternator is sound. With a fresh battery you can get by for a while if you still have a problem! Don't want a repeat in a few week's time.....

Had a new stator put in about six months ago when they did the cams, so I should be good to go. The voltage meter on the bike in acting more normal now, too. Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it.
