Howdy, Was riding last night and ran into a small issue. Hadn't riden at night for quite awhile so never noticed this before. The lights on my speedometer and tachometer flickered on and off. It wasn't constant and didn't seem to affect the gauges in any way. Looked in the manual to see if I could track the wiring down and see if they join together somewhere. This will be the first time I have the fairing off. Are the lights wired seperately from the rest? Weather gonna be crappy Sunday and Monday so I thought I would do it then. Any advice or pointers on where to look?
Well I pulled the fairing off. Couldn't seem to find the bulbs for the speedo and tach. Did find a mess from the previous owners radio install. Thought I was going to have to but new speakers. Turns out I have Infinity speakers 75/225 watts, a Shark amp which I believe is 250 watts, Biketronics retroradio, and apparently a crappy radio. Was having issues with the hand controls so I called Biketronics and got some help. They recommended a ground straight from the radio since I was having issues with the hand controls. Fixed it up. Guess I'll just have to live with the light problem for the time being. Supposed to be deploying to Afghan next year. Will leave it with a shop and have them do some work on it while I am gone.
The lights are wired with the other lights. There is NO lamp one can change, the lamp is internal to both gauges.
I would look sreiously at the Black wire with a Green (NOT light green like to speakers) stripe. There are TWO of these in the fairing. If you trace them out... one goes to the radio harness, and that wire come wire goes to various audio controls and the radio it self. THAT wire is a 'clean' ground and should NOT be mixed with plain black wires as black is 'dirty' ground.
The OTHER balck with green stripe is the one that goes to the speedo and also to the tach. This one goes to the 'cruise' switch next to ignition switch and also comes from main harness as #12 on that connector. This also goes to the LEFT side handlebar switches.
Check out: that neither blk/grn is NOT mixed with straight blk wires. Also check that blk/grn going to radio is not co-mingled with blk/grn that goes to speed/tach. Check all connections and look for looseness... tug on wires, if it comes apart you need to fix.
Lastly, the orange and white wire ( not the orange) should be looked at. If you found the 12 position plug with the black and green at pos#12, then this one #5 on a 16 position plug. That wire should be the lamp hot and it goes from the 16 connector, to the tach/speedo and then to left and right handlebar switches and cheanges clors at the connector going to the 'cruise' switch, to orange and violet.
