Ignition/Tuner/ECM/Fuel InjectionNeed advice on ignition issues? Questions about a tuner? Have questions about a EFI calibration or Fuel Injection? Tips on Engine Diagnostics, how to get codes, and what they mean. Find your answers here.
I have a 2000 Road King EFI and the engine light keeps coming on then going off periodically. It will come on for 15-20 seconds, then go off for a few minutes...then come back on, off, and so on. Sometimes it will stay off for awhile...then come back on and do as I mentioned above. The longest I have seen it stay on was for a few minutes...but it always goes off (but eventually comes back on). After reading the forums (and doing extensive "searches")...I have somewhat come to the conclusion it is related to a few "bad starts" and am assuming the code(s) are historical since the light does go out. The bike runs great with the exception of a bad start from time to time (cranks over slow and may not hit right away). I have read that the codes (if historical) will reset themselves after about 50 starts, but since I do have the occasional bad start...I'm afraid I will never see those 50 consecutive "good starts" to clear the codes. Not to mention, I am not 100% that the codes are due to bad starts.
I have tried to retrieve the codes to figure out exactly what the problem is...but am unable to retrieve the codes. The method I tried was:
Run switch in on position
Press and hold in trip reset button
Turn ignition switch on
Release trip reset button until "PSSPt" is displayed
Nothing ever displayed. I held the trip reset button for almost two minutes waiting for the display to change...and it never did. Are the codes not retrieved on a 2000 RK EFI using this method?
If not, does anyone happen to know the proper way to retrieve the codes? If more info is needed about my bike...I would be more than happy to provide. I am trying to learn everything I can about my bike and be "self-sufficient" with maintenance and upkeep. Any help is much appreciated!
