2003 low rider check engine light

My check engine light came on and went out, came on stayed on then went out. From reading past post I guess there is some code that occured. I am thinking there is some short in my system. At one point after stopping and turning the key to on, the odometer was not showing until in Jiggled the key/ignition then the milage showed.

A few months ago, the bike would not start, lights, horn etc but starter nothing, found a fuse was blown but I could not find a reason. Then after that when there is no key in the ignition and I am moving the bike the Odometer will come on.

Do the 03 models have the same Dtcs as the 04 and above? Any suggestion on where to look for a short or any other theories on Dyna's electical issue?

I had a short a few weeks ago.. Right behind the battery cage. Check your battery cables. One might be loose.

Depending on the period the engine light comes on, goes off, comes on again and goes off again you could have a current or a functional error (historic trouble code). When turning on the key, three situations can occur:

1. With the engine stop switch in "on" position turn on the key; the engine light comes up for 4 seconds and goes off and stays off: no current trouble code

2. With the engine stop switch in "on" position turn on the key; the engine light comes up for 4 seconds and goes off for 4 seconds and comes up for 8 seconds and goes off and stays off: functional error (historic trouble code may exist)

3. With the engine stop switch in "on" position turn on the key; the engine light comes up for 4 seconds and goes off for 4 seconds and comes up and remains on: current trouble code

You'll need a scanalyzer to check the trouble codes. An alternative way of checking the codes is in the electrical diagnostic manual. I bought mine recently at Ebay.

If the actual situation at your bike looks like #2, you can remove the historic trouble codes proceed as follows:

After correcting system problems, clear trouble codes. If the Scanalyzer is not available, perform 50 start and run cycles. To execute one run cycle:

Start the vehicle;
Let it run for at least 30 seconds;
Turn the engine off.

There are instruction on the forum somewhere, on how to get your trouble codes.

If you're lucky, you can get them by having your run switch on, hold in the odometer/trip meter button while turning on the ignition. The codes pop up on your odometer. Not sure if that method will work on your bike. (If you get P01CLR - that's not it - those are diagnostics for the speedo)

If the first method doesn't work on your bike, you need to get to your datalink connector, jumper pins 1 & 2, run switch on, turn on the ignition, and count the flashes.
