My current phase for improvements to the bike is in the area of suspension & handling.
I have recently put on a Superbrace ($180), and just ordered a True-track ($300). My next purchase is Ricor Intiminators ($300).
The question is about Ohlins shocks. Are they really worth the price? It will take me 3-4 months to save the $$ for them, and I just want to know if the improvement is worth the cost. If I get them they will be the most expensive part of this project. If they make as much difference as I expect the True-Track & Intiminators to make they may be worth it, but if they make less of a difference, I think I'll pass and start saving for some engine performance stuff.
Suspension is just one area to NOT try and skimp on. I say if you can, go for it. Look at other companies too, I see Works being brought up quite a bit.
I've rode offroad for a long time and have felt the difference in stock/aftermarket suspensions and shocks. WOW is all I can say.
If I could afford it, I would not only replace my rear shocks with some top quality built/tuned to me, but the front forks as well. But, I'm happy just cruising along anymore and really...the factory suspension is working good. For me.
Rounder are you still running with the FXDX shocks.? I just picked up a set (poor mans upgrade) for my FXD and was wondering how much of an improvement they are over the stock chromeees.
Thanks - George
An upgrade in shocks is definitely worth it. If i could have afforded the Ohlins i would have gone with them. As my pocket was,nt quite deep enough i went with what i could afford ( Hagons ). In my humble opinion a 96" with the sort of engine improvements such as yours and the right chassis improvements that you are doing / proposing will be a formidable tool.
By the way, i notice you have the Boyeson x- wing fitted. What is your opinion on it as i read a good write up on it in one of the mags.
The short answer is I don't know. I probably read the same article, and was interested. Boyeson has a good reputation and I know that with air flow small things sometimes make a big difference. For example head work: you want the intake ports roughed up to cause turbulence/mixing, and the exhaust polished to speed exhaust pulses. I wouldn't think those small differences would matter at all, but apparently they do.
I figured for the $100 they wanted off of ebay, it was worth the gamble. Even though I've read many a post on HDForums that they are snake oil, I didn't want to go through the expense of doing a dyno run pre-install, and another post, just to satisfy a naysayer, who probably wouldn't be convinced anyway.
But I am happy with the whole stage 1, I got good numbers: 90.6 Tq/76.36Hp. You can see my dyno sheet in my picture album if you're interested.
