Just changed the battery in the wifes 2006 883c sporty. The bike sat for over a year and a half while she was in Afganistan .I put the battery in ,bike starts and runs great eveything works but the speedometer and the odometer, checked all plugs and wiring around the speedo and the battery area.Has anyone had this problem before,Thanks
Will the speed sensor have anything to do with the odometer and light not even working with the bike not started ?Turn the key on and nothing works and all fuses are good ,unless there is another fuse somewhere besides at the fuse block at the battery.

you didn't say that in your initial post. :-)
do you by chance have a red security light on too?
did you look at the fuses or did you actually test them? and yes the speed sensor is known to cause other kinds of problems since it piks up magnetic particles. pull it out and clean it.
sorry.yes I tested evey fuse and I pulled the speed sensor out and cleaned it it was oily thats all ,reinstall sensor and no change.Key on no odometer read out no light and speedo doesnt even twich when you turn key on ,rode bike speedo dont even move. And no there is no red light on ,This has me stumped.
Can u pull the speedo and check the connection on the back. Put dielectric grease inside the connector. Also check plug at ecm for dirt or loose wires/pins. Again put dielectric grease in that connector also
Still stumped, removed tank check all plugs undid them looked and reconnected check plug at ecm ok,removed speedo and checked connections 3 of the wires going to speedo at the plug connection at the speedo have power but I dont have a wiring diagram to tell what they work.Could the speedo and odometer and back light just go bad from setting for a year with no battery in it or do I have some sort of special problem.Anyone ever been thru this before? Thanks
absolutely so. have you tried to get the speedo into diag mode and check for codes?
1. ignition off, run/stop switch to Run
2. push odometer button in and hold it
3. turn ignition on, and then release odometer button. Needle should sweep, and indicator lamps should light up then "diag" should appear in the display
4. push the odometer button 1 time and you should see "PSSPt" with the P flashing
5. push the odometer button and release and you will switch from P to S then S, P, t
P - ECM/ICM (whether EFI or Carbureted)
S - TSM/TSSM (turn signal module/turn signal security module)
SP - Speedometer
t - Tach
6. Push the odometer button in and hold it for 5 secs and release. If any codes are present it will be shown, if not then the word "none" will appear
Let us know if you have any codes and exactly what they are.
