Ignition/Tuner/ECM/Fuel InjectionNeed advice on ignition issues? Questions about a tuner? Have questions about a EFI calibration or Fuel Injection? Tips on Engine Diagnostics, how to get codes, and what they mean. Find your answers here.
I assume this is the right sub-forum for this question. If not, I'll try "engine, etc..." next.
I have a 2005 Ultra with a relatively new battery and also have had it on the tender when not riding. Bike has 59,000 miles on it and has been meticulously maintained.
When I start the bike cold, it fires right up. When I start it warm (after stopping for fuel, for example) it cranks once, then hesitates, and finally kicks over and starts. It is a bit unnerving, and I'm wondering what may be going on. I always wait for my little orange light to go off, letting me know I can start the engine. (BTW, is that necessary when the engine is warm -- or just cold starting?)
Starter? Battery again? Just the way it works? I don't recall it being a problem before, but it has become a concern now...
Thanks in advance for your thoughts. I'll check back soon...
Compression is a little higher when the engine is hot. Supposedly because the piston rings seal a bit better.
If your battery gets weaker due to age you'll find it struggling a bit although, you say this is not the case. Might not be the battery but the starter getting a little tired.

That was what I was thinking...but wanted independent confirmation before checking with my indy mechanic... Thanks for feedback.
have a load test done on the battery, as stated after a heat soak it takes more cranking power to turn over the engine. so you can rule out if it the battery or another concern.
Well if the battery is new and the connections are good, then it is time to put a amp meter on the starter to see how many amps it is drawing.
I agree with you on doing a current draw on starter also when heat goes up so does the resistance. but still would test the battery seen new ones that were junk also. its one or the other.
