Default Auto Tune v SERT

I am currently at a crossroads. I am trying to decide where to go from here.

I have an 07 Night Train that had simple mods done to it before I bought it, such as aftermarket cobra 2 in 1 pipe and opened up air cleaner a bit.

When this was originally bought, it was tuned with a SERT from the dealership. This was in 2007.

The bike has too much decel pop and it stalling out at stops. It's not right, but I have already had it checked for the usual, such as exhaust leaks, etc.

Anyway, all of that to say this. I am debating on taking it to the dealership and having it re-tuned on the dyno. OR, I am looking at the Cobra PowerPro auto tune. I would have to have the dealership flash the ecm according to Cobra, but the auto tune would do all of the work.

I just wanted to get everyone's thoughts on the topic. A few final things are that money isn't a factor and that I do not race the bike. It's "normal" riding. Also the SERT in my hands is useless. Don't know how to change the maps myself.

Thank you all in advance!!!!!

Learn how to use SERT just cause it's worthless in your hands now does not mean it will always be worthless. SERT is by far superior to any of the Cobra products I've seen or heard of.

Thanks Uncle Chester. I go back and forth. But I know the SERT is a better product that you can do more things.

I have all of the software on my computer. I just need to get a cord from my newer computer that will work with the older SERT setup. I've bought one, but it didn't work.

You already have the SERT. Just learn to use it and you can tune your own bike. Buttloads of info here

Piston, very good thread. Thanks for the link. I read through the first 10 pages and will probably end up reading through all 100+.

I do like the idea of tweaking on my own, which the auto tune doesn't allow. There's a local dealer that can put it on the dyno.

I need to get it right bc there's nothing worse than a Harley in the garage on a nice day.

Where in MO are you located? Near St Louis? Dealers generally suck at tuning, but I know a really good shop near St Louis. C&S Speed Shop in East St Louis. If they are close to you, they can use the SERT and tune it really nice.

Usually doesn't work very well, just guessing... and without some sort of data logging and sniffing equipment, the SERT is at a disadvantage.

With that being said, go to the TTS Mastertune web site, and there is a form you can fill out to see if your SERT can be upgraded into a TTS. I'm fairly certain, based upon the year of your bike, that your SERT is a good candidate for such and upgrade.

Wurk Truk

This is the first I've heard of a TTS upgrade. I'm intrigued. My issue is that I have a Windows 8 computer and I bought a serial to usb cable, but it doesn't work when I hook it up. TTS has cables, but only goes to Windows 7. I have access to a computer with Windows 7, so I may give that a try.

Thanks for the information. I've already learned so much from the forum!

Oh, and I'm in SW MO.

Look for updated drivers for the USB to Serial.

Be advised, to log data with the TTS requires that the laptop be attached to the bike while riding. The SEPST only requires that a cigarette pack sized VCI be attached IOT log up to an hour's worth of data.

I would get Dynojet's Power Vision. No laptop required to gather data and it comes with its own monitor/flash tuner. Through Fuel Moto, you also would get an upgrade credit for your SERT.

*****UPDATE*****

Thanks to everyone for your input. This is what I decided to do.

I purchased the Cobra PowrPro and installed it myself. It was easy to install and I noticed a difference immediately. I had to have the local Harley dealership put the stock map back on and they were like "why you have the SERT?" lol.

That fixed the problem with it running lean and dying on me. Then, working with an AWESOME local shop, we started in on the pipe and found the exhaust leak. It was the pipe where it meets the block. The sleeve was broken. A little weld job and BAM!

This bike has NEVER ran as good as its running now. I never want to get off of it! Got plans for a nice ride this weekend. We'll see how it does.

By the way, I like the Auto Tuner and have had no problems up the this point.
