I just got a used 2000 Softail Standard. A few days of riding and I noticed the speedo would cut out and the engine light come on but my signals still self cancelled, actually they would self cancel prematurely. So I did some research here and checked the speedo sensor and cleaned off the metal shavings. Still have the same problem, so then I did the self diagnostic test to see what engine code I'm throwing - comes up as 16 which is battery voltage high/low. I remember the pervious owner mentioned he just had a new battery put it in. So I check the battery terminals with a voltmeter and it seems fine. So where do I look next?

 

try the voltage reg. then the stator. ok

 

bingo... the voltage regulator was fried and the shop is also replacing the stator
