Well, so far...........new points and condenser, new coil and wires, push rods adjusted perfect, front exhaust tight and sealed, propane at the intake makes no difference. Plug seems to get soaked pretty good. I'm wondering if it's a carb issue. I've never had an S&S so it's new to me. What does the lever do on top? Choke? Up for on, down for off? When you pull it all the way up the idle is really high, when all the way down, the idle is almost too low and she'll die out. In the middle is where I've had it and it was fine. If it was running lean would the plugs be wet and fouled? Seems like it's running rich if anything...........
the lever is the choke only // as it is an enrichner - up on down off
the carb has 3 adjustments - looking at it from the right side of the bike
to the rear of the bike is base idle around 900 RPMs is what is best
top of the carb is idle mixture - its a brass screw and it faces to the rear -- smoothest idle and the the center between the two ( turn in till it starts to die - turn out till it starts to die ) at best idle is the spot
all the way to the right and on the inside is the acc pump stream spray / in is lean out is rich - we turn them 1 and 1/2 out -- then adjust in till you notice a slight hesitation and back it off - it will adjust the motor for the best fuel mileage as well keeping it on the lean side
low speed jet is most likely - 295 - main jet could be a 72 - thats it
Thanks John, great info. I'll make the adjustments tomorrow and report back, closed down the garage for now. At least now I know all the other stuff is all good. $$$
LOWNSLOW, glad to hear you have a '70 sporty. I have a '70 XLCH myself.
What kind of plug wires you got on it? they carbon core resistor wires?
And have you swapped the wires on the coil towers? Possible you have a bad internal connection in that coil. I run Accel copper core plug wires.Hotter spark, and more reliable. You don't need any resistor wires, you don't have any electronics for the EMI to mess with. And remember, it's better to be a little loose on the valve adjustment than tight! I had an issue with mine one time, I was adjusting the exhaust valves too often. I have drag pipes, and I have a Bendix carb. And I was riding her hard. When I took the heads off I discovered my exhaust valves had been getting HOT and were warping. I put new stainless exh valves in and never had a problem!
Gearhead, yea there carbon core, I may switch them out to copper core later. I just switched them out with a known good pair. I adjust my valves with the exhaust slightly looser than the intake. Since everything is iron, I run the intakes with no slop and then just a slight resistance when turned. The exhaust I run no slop but free spin.
John, I made the adjustments to the carb, it was horribly out of adjustment. She's running really good now and plugs cleaned up some. I'm taking her on a nice long Memorial Day ride today. New comfy seat and new squishy progressive shocks should make it a pleasure.
Thanks all for the input, the Classic section kicks *** on here!!!!!!!!
