Went and had a look at a 71 basket yesterday. Looked like a 71 motor xlch with an electric start as well. I think the biggest problem that I could see was xlch oil tank and battery holder would not accomodate big battery needed for electric start along with numerous other missing parts and no registration. asking $2900. canadian. Should I keep looking??
Around here IronHead Sportsters are always asking about what double the usual USA price. Is it the same where you are? $2900 is about double what i would consider paying for a basket case.
No registration so it is only good for parts - buy, part out on eBay, you have to be able to make back double what you paid to make the trouble worthwhile. It would be foolish to spend the probably $1000 to $2000 to make it a running bike, then risk having it confiscated, or not being able to sell it when you need to.
I believe I could get a ownership for it assuming it's a legal bike. It seems that it is way overpriced for whats there and even though it is partially assembled it would need to be completely dismantled and start over. Prices here for them seem higher than in the states but with our$$$ there is not much saving. Also they are hard to find here anymore.
But having said all that I think I will take Poco's advice and keep looking
