check ebay. i was told 20 years ago to be careful when buying a basket case becaues of all the parts you might end up buying, and they add up. good luck with it.

+1 on eBay. I have bought many items there during the past 3 or 4 years. I have never found a bad seller; got lots of good deals; got lots of stuff i could not have found anywhere else. A couple of times i made a bad purchase but those were my own responsibility.

Be sure of your model before you buy parts. Basket cases are always suspect. Check the belly numbers to see if they match each other and are the same year as the VIN or possibly a year earlier. The format should be something like x72-1234 The x is the engine size. If it was a 1 it would be for a 74 Big Twin. I don't remember what a sportster should be, I believe a 2 but I'm not sure. The 72 the year of the cases. The vin should be the format 3A12345H2 or 4A12345H2 The 3A means it is an XLH the 4A an XLCH. Get the parts manual and when you are sure what you need, be specific, I know a lot of forum members would love to clean out there garage and get rid of unwanted parts. I got rid of my Sportster so anything I have left I've been selling on E-bay or locally. Also before you dump any money into it, check the cases for cracks, especially behind the transmission sprocket. If it is cracked in this area you are pretty much screwed and would have to find new cases.

Bike shows and Swap meets are a good place to find/get parts and a wealth of info.

You can get everything you need from J&P Cycle if you run out of options. I restored my 73 XLCH and they had everything.
