Hey Neal, Yes, lots of us who love the old Iron have the same feelings about the new, modern stuff. I personally wish all the best to the new HD dealers and their customers, but they are not serving my needs or wants. I have a few very good local indie shops that i patronize.

I haven't had much luck finding local indies. Fergus alternator I would trust....that is about it. I tried my local Ideal Supply for some machine shop work but they said no. There is one small bike shop here...but I've heard too many complaints...the rest are small dealers (honda, kawa, etc) in this town.
Mick: I assume your local indie carries catalogue parts?
I compare catalogue parts (plus shipping and duty) and the dealer I patronize and sometimes its better to buy from the dealer and sometimes better to wait and get it shipped.
I wish this town had a good indie....even just to hang at and talk bikes on a rainy sunday afternoon.

PD Restoration, owner Phil Dickson. Full service shop. Catalogs, inventory of used parts, a wall of stuff like at a HD shop, restorations of all old bikes, bike mechanic, marine mechanic, truck mechanic, welder, artist; never ceases to be helpful. This man is awesome ...

I was in the OP's position just recently myself. Son drags in an old sportbike. (actually an '87 Honda 600F, the original "Hurricane"!)

Jeez, the wiring harness just disappears into the bike and I know absolutely nothing about modern sportbikes... other than you can blow up some expensive old electronics with a short. Pulled out the multimeter and threw it into 'beep mode' for continiuty. One lead on some real metal (harder than you think on a sportbike) and figured the one batt wire that beeped would be the ground. I figured I had a 50/50 chance on the first try. Well, glad I wasn't guessing using a hot battery because I would have guessed wrong!

It just happens to be in this case.
