Default Non working starter button

The guy I bought my 99 Ultra Classic from said that he had had some starter problems, so he had a new starter put on it and had a plunger put on the starter to start the bike if the button didn't work. I find that more and more I have to use the plunger on the starter more and more. When I press the button, the radio dims badly. Maybe a grounded wire off the button? Pinched wire in the housing? I find it hard to believe that a Harley mech wouldn't have tried a new switch. Thoughts?

when the plunger is used - ALL the wiring is bypassed..the handlebar switch, the relay the wiring to and from etc. is bypassed--- only the battery cable is carrying power.

if you are having problems the battery is the first place to look.

take it out and have it load tested , at the same time clean and tighten the battery cable connections at both ends- make sure the cable isn't corroding inside the insulation- look for powder coming out of the insulation when the cable is tapped on a hard surface.
