Default Wheel Size?

I've got a chance to buy a complete front and rear wheel set (with drum brakes) for my bike (72 XLH). The guy who has them just bought a box of parts and doesn't know what year they are, but they look like they are in much better shape than what I have now.

Anyway, the rear wheel is 16" and the front is 19". My rear wheel is 18" and the front is 19". Is it going to make any difference if I put a 16" wheel on the back?

Thanks,
Barry

bdavis......
Your bike came with an 18 rear and a 19 front. The 16 rear should be the same hub as your 18 and the front should be the same period. I would check the axle diameter on both the front and rear of the wheels you plan to purchase to make sure they are the same as what you have.
I would get the seller to throw in both brake drums for free.
I would also try to get the seller to throw in the axles and spacers for free when you buy. It won't hurt to ask.

The only possible problem you may have on the rear is the extra width of the 16 tire hitting your fender struts. Measure your fender and take a tape with you and measure the 16's width. It is probably going to clear, but it may be close.
Also measure the circumference of your inflated 18 inch tire and compare to the measurement of the 16 inch tire's circumference. Any difference will affect your speedometer accuracy to a degree, although this is a very minor issue.
Good luck.........pg

The short of it is if the rear wheel is shorter around than your present one, the RPM's will be higher at the same MPH. This might be a small difference that is not a problem or it maybe quite a few hundred RPM. Is your speedo driven off the front wheel. If it is, the speedometer will not be effected.

Speedo shoud not change much as the side wall on the 16" is much taller than the 18" so the dia. is about the same. The fender may be close, but this was a very com. mod. in the day. (I like the look of the 18" better)

Well, right now I don't have a speedo, so I'm not sure if that will hurt

Actually, I do have a mini-speedo I bought from J and P Cycles but the cable they sent me will not fit the nut on the case. This is the second cable they've sent that they said is designed for the 1972.
