Default Fwd controls swapped, is this normal?

So on my 71' Iron when I first got it I noticed my brake and my shifter are swapped, meaning my shifter is on the right side and my brake is on the left. Not going to lie definitely took me a sec to realized it was swapped so I'm sure you can imagine the frustration haha. I thought it was very weird. I've rode a lot of bikes before but never seen this. Is it only a sporty thing back in the day or did one of the previous owners swap them? Curiosity is killing the cat right now and was just wondering if anyone else has heard about this or seen it. Thank you!

Yes, it's normal.

All Sportsters prior to 1975 had the shifter on the right and brake on the left.

Stock configuration, they way she left Milwaukee, except of course they never had forward controls.

Some Brit bikes were that way also. The "we know what's good for you" crowd decided people were too stupid to figure it out on their own and made it a law all the bikes had to be uniform.

I had a 1964 sportser for alot of years, and it was the same but previous owner had a crossover "kit" on it. Made it feel a little clunky but you got used to it.

On the 75 model you could change it back to right side shift if you wanted because the shifter output shaft still came out the right side case.

Perfectly normal for a 71. ALL Brit bikes were right side shift along with the pre 75 Ironheads. WHY????? FLAT TRACK RACING. Watch in the turns and see the LEFT FOOT dragging the dirt track. The Ironheads were made to compete with the British Bikes and it carried over to the Street Bikes. In 75 the Government Mandates made everybody standardize the controls.

Do you have a pic of the forwards? I have a 74 ridged and want to do forwards on it. Seems like my front exhaust pipe would be in the way though.

Some forwards install behind the exhaust, some forward of it. Best are the ones that install behind, especially if you are not extra long in the legs. Some that install forward of the exhaust, the ones referred to as "Daniel Boon style", are very bad - commonly break at the welds, etc.
