Hi folks. My motor is freshly rebuilt and running like a poked ape. Sounds awesome too! However, I'm hoping to find an oil cooler to install before Biketoberfest down here in October. Last year was a cooker even though it was mid October. I'm thinking J&P may have them (or even eBay), but can anyone recommend a brand you'd go with? Lockhart was the brand back in the day, but not sure they're even around now. Thanks
Ironheads run Much Hotter than other Harleys..except maybe the other Iron Bike (Knuckleheads)
Never bothered me nor my 77 XLCH one drop...trust me that one has been very, very hot. More than once!
My Youngest and Friends, after winning His First National Event..
Just an endorsement, I wouldn't take delivery of my '83 FXSB without a Lockhart oil cooler, 42 years later it is in fine original condition.
Good idea. Last year we had an extra hot October here in Central FL. During Biketoberfest, my older son was using it and we had some long red lights. Lots of bike event traffic. Toward the end of the day we realized it was just cooking. When we had the motor apart we could tell it was just fried. Head gasket, pistons, and the cams were awful - they looked like the outer coating was just gone. Now, I'm sure all that didn't happen all in one day of course. It probably was cooking over time. Now that the engine is completely rebuilt, I'd like to make every effort to keep it cooler while running. Biketoberfest is around the corner and my sons are coming back out again to enjoy the festivities. My younger son rides my '96 Sportster 1200c and the older one will grab the ironhead again. Wide and I ride my Streetglide (aka, the sofa). Looking forward to getting the Lockhart on the ironhead once it arrives next week.
Since late Ironheads 1977+ got a superior Oil Pump... I suspect it can't Hurt... tho the filter does act in a small way as a Cooler. My '77 is an XLCH..No Filter even...and It has been used hard for a Long time..No Problems..but, I never sit in Traffic...Never. Pre-'77 Ironhead??? No way I put a Cooler on it, any more than I use a Cooler on my Shovel..
