1979 XL's were known to have come off the production line and develop a bad habit of popping either out of 2 or 3rd gear. With that in mind I went looking for an XL with a friend and the2nd sportsterwe looked at , low and behold it was a 1979 and as I was riding, it kept popping out of gear. Do all 1979's do that, probably not but its something to look out for and is fixable.

Good looking bike - looks like your neighbor is trying to steam clean it for you!

Hey, you can actually do a pretty good job with rattle cans. Just sayin'.... I did a real niceredwith almondpatches on my Suzuki. I did seal it up with a nicer two-part PPG clearcoat. Ten years later, it still looks good....

Here's a pic of my 79. Rattlecan Black w/clearcoat. Painted it 3 years ago and it still looks great. Mine had the habit of jumping out of second, but it was because the dogs on the back side of secong gear were worn and rounded off a little which let it slit out of second sometimes. Replaced the gears and all is well.

While they are not "ribbed" tires, I run Shinko SR712 tires on my Ironhead and have for 10+ years. They wear good and do great in the rain. I can put a set on for 100 bucks.

Thanks man,

Your bike looks like it's in pretty good shape... just needs a little TLC and it ought to be really nice. Mine was butt ugly when I bought it. and the rattlecan job was more than just spraying it and being done. I first spayed it real good, then sanded it smooth with some 1000 grit paper. Then I clear coated it and waited several weeks before buffing it out real good. It took some work to get it slick and shiney, but I;m happy with the results and it didn't cost but a few bucks to do. I've spent much more time cleaning up the aluminumcases than anything else.
Alot of people rag on the 79's because they are a bastard year for sporty's, but I really like mine alot. I haven't really had any problems finding stuff to fit mine either. Most stuff that fits other Sporty's can be made to work on the 79's with a little effort and ingenuity.

I hope you enjoy yours, and send up some pics as you progress throughfixing it up.

Later,

Bassman
