Default Transmission history

I have a XLCH '75 1000 motor with rt hand shift. The tranny had some issues, so I found another, suppose to be from a 72, for pretty cheap to rob parts from. They seem to be nearly identical, but the main thing I noticed was the countershaft low gear on the 72 has a spiral gear on the end of it, maybe for a speedo, or ? Other than that, do you know if these trans are identical? The trans looks great so I want to use it, Can I just swap the low gear and be good to go if I shim it correctely? Seems my low gear has two spacers under it with a thin shim at the end, the earlier has one spacer with a thicker shim at the end.. I couldnt find any info between the 2 in my manual. Can you tell me what years used which? Also my book has nothing on shimming the trans once installed in the bike, only checking clearances with it on the bench. I thought I saw a post on this but couldnt find it. Help would be appreciated.
Last question is what year did they switch between a hollow and solid main shaft? thanks in advance.

Default RE: Transmission history

I may be speaking out of turn here because I am not sure of the 1975 features, but for the most part, I think they should be the same.
That said, you should just try to use the entire replacement transmission rather than mixing the parts. Shimming up the mixed parts may become a project in itself before you are done.

The spiral gear on the end of the of the C/S is for the speedometer drive. You will just have to try the counter shaft on the older trans to see if it fits into the compartment. Since the speedo was moved to the front wheel, HD may have made some changes to the inside of the tranny compartment, although I somewhat doubt that being done. Put both trans side by side and see how the two line up. This is only a rough measurement of course.

The hole through the mainshaft is there for the clutch rod that goes from the rightside sprocket cover to the leftside (clutch pressure plate). This was the set up from 1957 to 1970, when the Sportster had a dry clutch.
The wet clutch was on the 1971 models, so the answer to the question is last year for hollow shaft is 1970, first for the solid is 1971. This is a big difference between the older and the newer transmissions with 1970/1971 being the split date.......pg
