Mainshaft
I'm currently in the middle of a transmission repair after the worn clutch gear and mainshaft second gear dogs repelled each other and broke the shift fork.
My 1979 factory service manual (99484-79) list several different specs for mainshaft and countershaft end plays.
Page 4-1:
mainshaft end play = 0.009-0.015"
countershaft end play = 0.004 - 0.009"
Page 4-21:
"If end play of either transmission mainshaft (2) or countershaft (17) is not within .003 to .009 in. limits..."
In the end, I'll probably call more than a couple and less than ten thousandths good for both, but what are the "right" answers?
Also, I am unclear on the "mainshaft thrust washer," shown in the attached figure as item 29. If the figure can't be viewed I am referring to a thrust washer located on the left side of the case, between the clutch gear and the mainshaft second gear. I am not referring to the variable sized tab washer located on the right side of the case used to set endplay.
Can anybody with experience tell me more about item 29? Is it what I am seeing pressed into the clutch gear and covering the clutch gear needle roller bearing? It is hard to tell from my manual if it is supposed to be seperate/loose, or if it presses into the clutch gear.
