I'm new to this forum and was surprise not to see any issues with Ironheads running with detergent oil in their bikes. I'm the orginal owner of my 74 XLCH and I remember the HD oils during that time was like 50wt STP...thick as Molasses. I'd just rebuilt my engine which I'd changed the exhaust seats for unleaded fuels and installed bronze guideson the intakes and cast iron guides on the exhausts. Once everything was completed, I'd poured in regular HD 20-50wt(Non-Synth) oil. After running the bikes for awhile for breakin, I'd noticed it was smoking more than normal. Taking off the carb manifold, I could see the both intake ports was covered in oil. Well, You would think it will be simple to just install valve seals like "Votrons" or those cheap tin cap seals but there is no room on the top of the valve guide to the Spring retainer.
So, Sorry for the long story, but just wanted to share my pain...The heads are still at the shop, trying to figure out what to do next.... Thanks, Sidekicker...
PinionGear: No, it's not due to ring leakage. That was the first thing I'd thought of, so pulled the barrels off and checked the rings. Ring gaps and gap locations are correct. Cylinder compressions are good. Can't get a good breakin until the oil problem is corrected.
Sqdealgeorge: No, The machine shop cut and press the new unleaded valve seats in.

Wheww, The valve guide seal issue has been resolved. Cutting the lower valve spring retainer crown flush with the inner spring pad give me enough clearance for the "Votron" guide seals. So far, the engine is burning clean and the clearance between upper spring retainer to seal is good. If your going to run a hotter cam, highly suggest checking clearance. Thanks, Sidekicker
