A buddy is building an ironhead the engine is 76 w/ kick & electric start He bought a starter but obviously wrong one He has solenoid With that said Is it possible that there are two applications or starters for this year Any help would be appreciated Thank You In Advance
'76 XL could have a Prestolite or Hitachi starter. Some '74 to early '76 XLs had the Hitachi. When they are compared to each other, the Prestolite will be longer.
There were two different starters,Prestolite and Hitachi.
Not sure if both were used in '76 or not, you'd have to refer to a parts book.
I have a '70-'78 service manual that shows both starters but it doesn't tell what years had which.
Pretty sure the prestolite was the earlier version but not sure when they changed.
I have a 1976 Sporster, mostly redone, and if my memory serves me there were starters for Kick Only and for Electric Start. The bikes with kick start only had smaller batteries, starters, etc.
I hope I am not misinforming you. A good local shop may be more helpful than a dealer. I think Custom Chrome has starters for those bikes.
