well pg i might have spoken to soon, i moved the brushes on the starter one place to the right on the plate and that made the stater spin the right way. the wiring for the start button was just messed up on the relay so i went off of the diagram that was posted. set the breaker plate at about half way and it went right off. i went down the road and it ran pretty good for for just setting it by ear so i was content for the day. last night i picked up a new set of plugs thinking today i would put them in and set the timing, hit the starter and the damn solinoid would not hold. when it did catch the bike ran great. i went about a 1/4 mile and then it started missing. backfireing throught he pipes to the point where i barley got it home under its own power. acctually i push the damn thing last 200 feet. the starter will catch now and then but more \\; often not. the spark looks good, \\;point are new, plugs look good since theres only about 1/2 mile on them. it sure seems electrical. can't imagine what happen that fast. any thought on both issues
thanks again
Thanks for the feedback on your problem. I had another member here last year who had a starter turning backward. I tried to tell him he needed to try moving the brush one position but I do not think he ever got it. That does make a difference in rotation direction.
So now the solenoid is not holding? I hate to ask after all you have been through, but are you sure all of the wires are good and tight with good connections?
If so, then the fix may be a replacement of the solenoid.
For the running problem, first get the starter to the point the bike will start every time you push the start button, then you will be free to pursue the running fix.
Make sure there are no air leaks with the inlet manifold. Back firing can be the result of leaks.
Check the ignition points gap and do this for both lobes. The setting on each should be no more than .004 difference in gap. The proper gap is .018.
Check your pushrod clearance. Yes, it is a bit of a pain, but check them just the same. What you are doing is going from one thing to the next and getting things correct. After you have done a step you will not have to be concerned with it being a problem and you can go on to the next step.
I do not think the reason the bike is not running properly is due to any kind of electrical problem, other than being something to do with the points and timing. Do not become frustrated with it, just keep on plugging away and you will get it going.
Let me know if there is anything I can help with or if you have any questions.........pg
i appreciate that pg. i'll start \\; with the solinoid. i been riding harleys since 79 and wiring has always givin me fits. i built 3 of this type bike in the last 3years and pull my hair out every time i get to this point. eventually it all comes together. how do i get some pics of my bikes on the site?i'll through a couple on. i'll keep you posted
thanks again
hey pg, i just noticed that the longer spring on the solenoid is not there. don't know how i missed that but that would seem that that would cause a problem oppisite of what i am having. would that spring not beeing there make starter gear not return? it seems to return alright it just won't stay in.
thanks
Replace the spring. It needs to be there and although it seems like it works against the solenoid holding things in, try starting the bike and see if the Gods are with you this time. Let us know if it (starter) works.
