Default Intresting front end story

So some of you have been keeping up with my post about "front end wobble" The final verdict was that when I purchased the machined cups to convert my front end to a newer style, the cups were too small. I called the compay that made the machined cups. The owner told me everything is done on a computer and he just couldnt see this happening, he did say that back in the old days, that sometimes Harley would mess something up on the frame, then, rather than throw away the whole frame, what ever was messed up, they would just machine custom parts to fit that section. Example: they bore out the neck too large, dont throw the frame away, they machine a set of cups to fit the larger opening. After telling me this, he said send the cups back and he would measure, and if need be, he would machine another set of cupsfor me. So I send the cups back, he measures, they are exactly to harley specs, however, I sent my oem cups as well, and they were .005" inches larger than all other ironheads. Not only was he right, and its not his fault, he is removing the bearing races for me, machining a brand new set, and sending everything back to me at no charge. The company im talking about is Billetwerx. The owners name is cliff, and he is outstanding. I first called the number from his website on sunday afternoon, just to get the store hours. He answers and spends about 20 min out of his sunday&nbsp\\;telling me all of this information. Well, I know I got a little long winded here, but I thought this was pretty wild. I guess I truly have a one of a kind Ironhead. The part that really sucks, is if I ever need new cups I will always have to have them custom made.

I went thru a similar problem when converting from the ball bearing to Timken style steering head cups. The steering neck was nearly .010" larger in diameter than the spigot on the replacement cups......A bunch of shim stock and a 6-pack later, problem solved! Nothing beats good 'ol American inginuity and determination. The bike handled much better after the conversion
