Default 23Tooth Sprocket

Just replaced mt 21 tooth front sprocket with a 23 tooth. WOW!!!!

THIS ROCKS.

No clutch slip, but yet my first gear feels right. 4th gear at freeway speeds is MUCH better. First time I can remember not getting to 55mph and not looking for another gear.

Not quite geared like my '87 FXSTC, but great in its own way.

If you haven't done it yet....go get 23 tooth sprocket. Very few clearance issues (at least on my '76 xlh), and nothing a few file strokes here and there wouldn't take care of.

Thanks again for the advice, guys!

I put a 23 on my '83 a couple of years ago and it's great on the highway. First gear is still plenty low enough, and I don't really feel much power difference unless I'm going up a mountain. I had to grind the sprocket cover mounting bosses a little for clearance, but that's all. Now, 70 mph is about 3300 rpm on mine.

I have a 22T on mine and with that you can't really tell much of a difference. But, the sprockets are soo cheap that really it's almost worth buying a 22, 23, and if you really want to grind some of your sprocket cover down a 24.

Then you can easily change em out when ever you need it. But yah 23 is probably the best solution for everyone.

To get a 24T to fit, I would have had to take the locating dowel out of my case and really grind the dowel casting away in my cover. Not a good idea in my opinion. Then I would hear all the warnings going off in my head from people like PinionGear, "have to slip the clutch with a 24T".....heed the warnings, my friend. These guys know.

If you have to replace the sprocket seal, it is a great time to try out a 23T. I didn't even need a new chain, but I never put on new sprockets with an old chain. And my chain was OLD.

I will take pix of the filing job required on my machine when I get up-and-moving today.

Everyone really needs to keep in mind as well that you may or may not have to grind more than the next person based on what type chain you have. If you have an o-ring chain and a 23T sprocket you might as well just remove your sprocket cover because your going to be grinding so much off it will be worthless.
